We need you to design a sculpture and plaque to recognize the achievements of women.
Who do you think should be recognized? You will: 1) Choose one or more women to honor from this list of nominees. You may also choose your own nominee. 2) Do some research on your nominee. Check Epic Books. Think about how your sculpture will represent your nominee. Will it look like her? Will you include any important objects with her? A sculpture doesn't need to look like a person to honor someone-- Will you represent her in a different way? 3) Create a small model of your sculpture (under 10 inches) using any safe medium you have available. This can be a 2-D or 3-D model. 4) Create a 3" x 5" plaque with a short related description or quote. A plaque is the writing that gives us more information about the artwork. |
Sculptor Meredith Bergmann created statues of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth for Central Park, New York City. These three women spoke up for equality and women's rights.
The sculpture first went on display in August 2020, the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in the U.S. in 1920. Of the 23 statues of historical figures in the 840-acre, 166-year-old public park, it is the first statue to honor actual women. There are statues of three female fictional characters: Alice in Wonderland, Mother Goose and William Shakespeare’s Juliet, who appears with Romeo. |

In the nonfiction book Ada's Violin, a community makes instruments out of parts that they find in their town's landfill. They end up forming an orchestra and playing all over the world!
Music can be made with almost anything. Create your own instrument out of materials of your choice. Can you make a drum? Can you make a guitar? A xylophone? Your own invention? There are many great websites out there to give you ideas. Here’s one to start with: https://www.howweelearn.com/spectacular-homemade-musical-instruments/ |
Use a cardboard box to create a game. Will it resemble a board game? Will it imitate the style of play of a game like pinball or a marble maze? Will you use spinners, cards, dice to play it? You choose!
Your game will: -fit inside the box -have at least one part that moves (spins, lifts, turns, rolls, etc.) -use the bottom of the box and at least two walls - include "How to Play" directions |
